Advising Student Groups

Brooke completed this course in Fall 2015 and earned an A for her final grade.

Class Outcomes

  • Demonstrate an ability to:

    • Know the theoretical basis for student involvement and effective organization advising.

    • Be aware of trends, issues, and problems institutions face when working with traditional college students.

  • Demonstrate an understanding of :

    • The different types of advising student groups and organizations and how they impact student success and development.

    • Group dynamics and leadership development theories that highlight group dynamics and student leadership.

    • The role of the advisor, risk management, practical skills and techniques that will assist in the formation of new student groups.

    • Utilizing the resources provided to help during future roles as an advisor of a student group or organization.

Ice Breaker/Team Builder

  • Purpose: Create an icebreaker or team building exercise that would be ideal for use during a student organization event.

  • Guidelines: You are a new student advisor, and you have 30 students ready to go, and not everyone knows each other. Be creative as you plan this event.

  • Purpose: Gather information from a student active in a student organization and learn about their experiences with their group and their advisor(s).

Advising Portfolio

  • Purpose: Create a new student organization that you will be advising and discuss your personal advising philosophy and project reflection.

  • Guideline: Include in your portfolio: Name of organization, mission statement, charter, budget, schedule, recruitment plan, and reflection.
