Advising & Supporting

Advising & Supporting advances the advising and support provided to students and other professionals by understanding individual self-knowledge as well as the needs of others. Important elements of this professional competency: listening, managing conflict and crisis, addressing the dynamics of groups, and partnering with others.

Coursework for the following classes have developed my understanding of this competency immensely. The links to my assignments reflecting my understanding can be found on these webpages:

Actively look for professional development in order to advance my understanding of this professional competency.

Utilized communication and learning technology, as well as learning theories, to address students’ holistic development of students in a lesson for CSP 1013: Principles of Collegiate Success and in a workshop for the First Year Experience Living-Learning Community (FYE LLC). As a representative of College Student Personnel, I collaborated with Residence Life in order to strategically pursue the objectives of their office as well as CSP in my conversations with the FYE LLC students.

In CSP 1013: Principles of Collegiate Success, I created multiple assignments that allow students to make decisions based on their personal values and strengths as well as set goals for their academic and professional futures.

In the course, "Advising Student Groups," we were provided with an assignment to create a new student organization to advise and discuss our personal advising philosophy and project reflection. We were asked to include a mission statement, charter, budget, schedule, and recruitment plan as well.

Created an icebreaker activity for Advising Student Groups, in which the members of a new sorority were able to learn about and communicate with each other, utilize technology and virtual resources, and learn the values of the organization. The values guide the holistic development of the members of this organization; therefore, this activity is the first step to providing students support and guidance.
