Law, Policy, & Governance

Law, Policy, & Governance guides student affairs professionals in terms of policy development, compliance and policy issues, the legal constructs and governance structures of higher education, especially in areas that affect individual practice. Important elements of this professional competency: Shifting from understanding to critical application of law, policy, and governance at various levels of the institution that are understanding of the various contexts of location (i.e., regional, national, international).

Coursework for Legal Issues for Professionals in CSP has developed my understanding of this competency immensely. The links to my assignments reflecting my understanding can be found on these webpages:

As part of a Blackboard discussion, students were asked to explain the difference between public and private institutions. I provided my explanation below by using Dunkel, Schuch, & Chrystal-Green's "Advising Student Groups and Organizations" as well as "A Legal Guide for Student Affairs Professionals," by Kaplan & Lee.

In another discussion board, we were asked to discuss the present and future implications Title IX will have on institutions and how the media and general public responds to these cases.

Professional development resources that have provided more context and expertise in legal matters in higher education that can be utilzed in professional practice.
