This semester, I chose a practicum internship that would increase my core competencies of Collaboration, Innovation, Researching, and Values Aligning as created by the Association of Fraternity & Sorority Advisors.

Not only did I acquire more knowledge about various functional areas on a new campus, program development, and the process of creating and submitting a program proposal, but used this experience as an opportunity to develop my knowledge of assessment.

The central project of my internship was planning and developing a program model for the First Year Experience Living-Learning Community's upcoming spring semester. I also acted as a liaison between Residence Life and College Student Personnel in order to obtain RA resources for the fall programming and as a means to streamline communication between the functional areas.

If you have ever worked with any type of LLC, you will know that communication between the faculty and staff can be difficult when developing and implementing programs. In an effort to find a solution, I stumbled upon this article by Juan Carlos Huerta and Michele J. Hansen that provides a list of best practices for assessment, including communication.

This article can really be used for any type of program that involves multiple functional areas or stakeholders. The best practices include specifying agreed-upon program goals, identifying the purpose of assessment, employing multiple assessment methods in order to affect decision making, using direct and indirect measures of student learning, and utilizing the results in order to enhance future learning experiences and ensuring that the needs of a diverse student group are being met.

So, I made an event checklist that can be edited and shared with all stakeholders involved. Here is the document with the broad goals and learning outcomes for my programming proposal, but you can edit it for your own programming needs!
