In CSP 1013: Principles of College Success, one of the learning objectives included teaching our students to understand what motivates them as an individual.

At the beginning of the semester, I showed them a video about growth mindset. In this video, Eduardo Briceno presented a research project's findings that indicated that students with a mindset that is always trying to learning and develop are more likely to succeed that students with a fixed mindset.

In order to take this a step further for the motivation lesson, I decided to utilize my favorite counseling theory-Reality Theory-and an activity in my textbook for Advising Student Groups. I created a self-evaluation that would encourage critical thinking and give students a method of connecting their motivations to their actions, "perfect world," and actual reality.

If you have students that seem unable to find internal motivation, this might be a great exercise for them. Download the PDF and let me know if you found this useful for your students!
